It was lovely to catch up and hear about the recent travels to Cuba.
Along the Way:
- Ferry trip to Woolwich Wharf enjoying the bracing fresh air at the front of the ferry.
- Caught the bus up the hill to Hunters Hill.
- Walked around some streets following part of the historic walk on Colin’s pamphlet and saw some amazing sandstone architecture.
- The gardens, as well as the houses, were very impressive
- Morning tea stop at Ottimo Italian Café. Lovely service with a smile and divine raspberry and coconut cake.
- Continued the walk around the streets.
- Some historic houses had markers such as “The Haven”.
- Gardens included large terraced sections and rockeries, huge hedges, topiary trees, even a waterfall in one front yard, huge jacaranda trees, statues, gigantic stone retaining walls, rotundas, stone arched entrances, beautiful metal entrance gates, murals on fence walls.
- Many of the houses had water views. Wouldn’t that be wonderful.
- The rear guard of the group, somehow got separated from the front guard. Luckily we were in phone contact with Peter who gave us some directions. We were very glad we did not continue all the way down the hill before realizing we hadn’t seen the front guard for some time. Probably added 5 km to our walk as we had to back-track. Only kidding! It couldn’t have been more than 3km.
- Continued around the streets noticing the grey clouds gathering and there was a slight shower so it was brolly time.
- Saw a few signs indicating we were on the Great North Walk. Yes, it remains a goal for the future to do the other sections of the Great North Walk!
- Entered into Kelly’s Bush and an area of dry dock.
- Chatted to a resident who told us the house opposite with the “W” letters scrolled into the metal wrought iron fencing was called Woodstock and was the oldest existing house still standing in the Woolwich-Hunters Hill area. He said it presently housed just one family now. It was literally the size of 4 normal sized houses.
- Lunch at Ironwood Café - great friendly service and food.
- Farewelled Peter who was going home via his private taxi service from his brother John.
- Walked back down the hill to the ferry at a slightly faster pace as the grey clouds were darkening.
- And the rain came down once we were under shelter.
- Caught the ferry back to Circular Quay where we caught our respective trains back home.
- A great walk with lots of chat along the way.
