June 2015 Report
Venue
Town Hall to Mrs Macquaries Chair and Botanic Gardens-
Participants
Yvonne, Chris, Ron, Colin and Natalie.
The start
The group met at Town Hall at 10.00 for a short walk up to Hyde Park.
Highlights
Catching up with Yvonne!
We strolled up to Hyde Park and came across a new Aboriginal War Memorial in the shape of bullets.
Along the beautiful walkway through Hyde Park – still wonderful to see the canopy of trees meet overhead.
The statue of Lachlan Macquarie, at the head of Macquarie Street, where he is pointing down towards Circular Quay.
Coffee at the Art Gallery Cafe, not time to read the script around the walls.
Short detour into the Botanic gardens to see the original buildings, the cactus garden and found the Friends of Botanic Gardens plant shop. Lots of small school children on excursions gave us a laugh as we watched them try to be contained.
Back around the lower path, a quick look through the fence to the Boy Charlton Pool and also looking across to Garden Island.
Sat on the stone “chair” and had our photo taken by a passing tourist.
Marvelled at the site of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge as we rounded the corner.
Lunch at the café! It was noisy for a while due to the wood chipper machine starting up right outside. Colin then tried to get Natalie’s attention in a loud school teacher voice. I think everyone stood to attention!
The finish
We walked up to Circular Quay to finish. Ron, Chris and Yvonne caught the train. Natalie and Colin did a short walk (not really short!) to the start of the 413 bus route only to find many of the paths were blocked so we ended up walking back up to Wynyard. As usual we made it with 2 minutes to spare.
