July 2015 Report
Venue
North Sydney Train Station to Mosman Ferry
Participants
Yvonne, Chris, Ron, Helen, Richard, Peter, Colin and Natalie.
The start
The group met at North Sydney Station at 10.00 and began by walking up to St Leonards Park.
Highlights
Passed some historic buildings and fountains in Miller Street.
Fountain in St Leonards Park to honour the Mayor, William Tunks, who reserved the space for a park.
Walked across the expressway over 13 lanes of traffic.
Down the hill and up the other side to the top of High Street.
Continued down to Milsons Point.
Café stop for coffee, tea and cakes. Yum.
Peter then chanced upon a friend also enjoying the ambience of the café.
Walked down to the harbour’s edge and around Kirribilli, past Admiralty House and Kirribilli House.
Down past the Ensemble Theatre to Milson Park and up and down steps to Anderson Park at Neutral Bay. Charles Kingsford Smith took off from this park in October 1934, at the commencement of what was to become the first flight across the Pacific from Australia to the United States of America. There were only 175 yards to get airborne. He then flew to Mascot airport.
Up and down more steps to Kurraba Road and around the streets near Cremorne Point.
Down to the bush path leading to Mosman, chatting to some other walkers only to discover one of them was a friend and colleague of Natalie’s.
Finally stopped at Mosman Rowers for lunch.
Thanks Richard for the extra chips.
Distance - 9km
The finish
We walked around to the ferry stop and had a pleasant trip back to Circular Quay. Most people caught the train home.
Yes Natalie and Colin made the 413 bus stop but only just. We saw the 413 at King Street wharf but had to wait 2 minutes for the bus to have its timing set properly. The timing and card readers didn’t work so it looked like a free ride home. Once on board we headed up to George Street and found that we were following another 413. We spoke to the bus driver who said we were on a 412! The bus at King Street Wharf stopped as a 413 but started as a 412! So…. he tailed the 413 and went through a red light at Town Hall so we could get off at the next stop and catch the correct bus. Always an adventure!
