November 2013 Report
Venue Leura in the Blue Mountains
Participants Ron, Chris, Peter, Colin, Natalie, Richard, Helen, Yvonne, Doug, Ian, Chris McL
The start - The group met at our accommodation ‘Kipplaw’ in the main street in Leura at around 11am
Highlights - Thursday afternoon the group travelled to Blackheath for lunch in the old picture theatre now filled with antiques. From here we went down to the Rhododendron Gardens. While there were some beautiful coloured blooms and bright, red waratahs scattered through the gardens, the vast majority were past their best. On the way back to Leura we stopped in at Evans Lookout. Once back, some people walked to Gordon Falls. A beaut BBQ, contributed to by everyone, was enjoyed for dinner.
Friday morning we packed our sandwich lunch and headed to the Megalong Valley. After making our way across some scrub, we followed the fire trail up to the end of the electricity poles. We then descended all the way to the road and made our way, by foot or car, to a picturesque coffee stop. Next stop was at Evans Lookout. Most of the group then walked the Cliff Top Walk back to Govett’s Lookout. They passed Haywood Gully, Deep Green Govett Gorge and then Barren Lookout before climbing the last 750m to the top. Lunch was very welcome.
Doug and his apprentice, Peter, produced very tasty risottos for dinner. Helped by the consumption of several bottles of wine, a good night was had by all.
The finish - Natalie, and helpers, served up bacon and scrambled eggs for breakfast. The group cleaned up our accommodation, said all our goodbyes, and then headed off in varying directions before reaching home.
Our fourth mountain break was a success in a different village and with warm sunshine. So nice to have Ian and Chris join us from Melbourne.
