Parramatta
Thursday, 2nd June 2022
The group met at Parramatta Station at about 9.30am
Participants - Ron, Chris, Peter, Colin and Natalie. We hope Helen, Richard and Yvonne enjoy our photos and we look forward to seeing you all soon.
We had previously done two walks in Parramatta.
In 2014-Historic walk- Gatehouse to Parramatta park, Obelisk, Old Govt House, Boer War memorial, Dairy, St Johns, Lancer Barracks, Hambledon Cottage.
In 2018-Lake Parramatta via Kings Oval, Female Factory precinct
Along the way in 2022-
*Walked through the new underpass towards the new pedestrian area that will be open soon and it will lead to the old Town Square
*Morning tea stop at the Bourke Street Bakery near the Town Square.
*Walked along Macquarie Street to the Philip Ruddock Heritage building and viewed the very impressive archaeological remains. Thanks to Ron for helping Natalie find out how to open the door! The remains can be viewed from above the site and at the lower level (once Ron worked his magic on the door handle!)
*We walked down to the Brislington Nursing and Medical Museum-not for the faint hearted. The information and displays were very good even if they made us a bit squeamish.
*Then down Church Street also known as Eat Street. Looks more open now that the hoardings have been taken down. Trams may run by the middle of next year.
*The number of high rise buildings has transformed the area. The demolition of some of the heritage buildings such as The Royal Oak Hotel and Willow Grove, for the new developments has been sad, but the area is looking revitalised.
*Viewed the exhibition at the Heritage and Visitors Centre. Natalie was excited to find an unexpected reference to the old Royal Oak Hotel which relates to some of her ancestors.
*Continued up Church Street to the new Royal Oak Hotel for lunch and enjoyed the lunchtime $15 specials.
Chris, Ron and Peter went back to the ferry at 1.20pm.
Natalie and Colin walked a bit further. (Natalie was keen to see a bit more of the tram works up to the intersection with Pennant Hills Road.
*We found the etchings in the pavement in front of the site of the old Royal Oak Hotel. They looked wonderful but I’m not sure how they will look after the pavement has been walked on over the next couple of months and years.
*The intersection at Pennant Hills Road shows completed tram tracks.
*We returned to the station via the new site for the Power House Museum, St Georges Terrace and the Roxy Theatre to see further developments there.
Time taken -This was a short walk over about 4 hours including stops at museums, morning tea and lunch from 9.30 to 1.20pm
I estimate that the group walked for about 3km.
