August 2013 report
Our walk started from Railway Square and took us along Broadway (towards Parramatta), past the massive developments at UTS and the old Tooheys brewery site. It was interesting to note the unusual architecture of the new buildings and how it coincided with the original styles.
After coffee we caught the 431 bus to end of Glebe Point Rd and walked around Rozelle Bay to The Crescent. The wharves along White Bay didn’t look too inviting! We wound our way through areas of new apartments, mixed in with quaint houses built many years before. At Gladstone Park Balmain, we were able to view pictures from Colin’s book that showed how the area had previously looked. Some elements like the clock tower remain.
From here we made our way to Mort Bay Park, once an area with a dry dock and much shipping activity. A great view towards the city made our lunch stop and Doug’s birthday biscuits even tastier! Along Wharf Road to Birchgrove Park with its picturesque oval and then to the ferry wharf for a ride back to Circular Quay. Yet another fantastic day.
