Ashfield Heritage Walks

Points of interest:
Starting in the village for coffee we combined Ashfield Heritage Walk No. 4 with most of Walk No. 1 and parts of Walk No. 2 ending back at Summer Hill.
North side of the railway
* Victorian Italianate houses and Federation cottages in Dover St and Kensington Rd. (Part of Summer Hill Station Estate subdivision of 1878)
* Beginning of the "Greenway" cycleway which follows the Hawthorne Canal (once Long Creek) under Parramatta Rd towards Iron Cove.
* Wong Tai Sin (Chinese) Buddhist Temple (Liverpool Rd)
* Ashfield Park (including Ron's grandparent's house and a statue of Mary Poppins)
South side of the railway
* Ashfield Police and Fire Stations
* Allman Park
* Masonic (Private) Hospital, 1931. The original residence (now supervisor's house), "Mountjoy", was built in 1870.
* Cardinal Freeman Retirement Village, built in the grounds of Frederick Clissold's major residence, a Victorian Italianate mansion known as "Glentworth" (1887)
* No. 160 Queen St, "Ambleside" also known as Ashfield Castle was built in 1887 in Victorian Free Gothic style.
* Trinity Grammar School
* Yeo Park (dedicated in 1925, was once part of Hurlstone Agricultural School). Bandstand built in 1929.
* Victoria Square (one of Ashfield's first subdivisions in 1876). The residents were originally responsible for the central reserve but Ashfield Council took over in 1889.
* Norton St - St Anthony's church, originally Congregational, now Croatian Catholic.
* Smith St - Four Victorian mansions, St Andrew's Anglican Church, Old Post Office (now a swanky restaurant)

* Summer Hill Hotel (1881, oldest in the area), and a good place for lunch
