- Watching the Olympics I became motivated to exercise and not happy walking in the street created my own mini marathon course within my own property. I have the perfect parcel of land to improve my aerobic fitness - step climbing and when I’ve done enough of this exercise I progress to walking from the street via pathways to the back boundary returning to the street and start all over, next exercise walking from the side boundary to opposite boundary so much easier than the previous exercise but still plenty of challenges to encounter. Finally cooling down exercises begin in the pergola area. At this stage I do 2 sessions per day and as my fitness improves will extend the sessions. My steps for the day 10,833 (8.1km).

-in the spirit of the walking group I ventured on a 7km walk in the Field of Mars Reserve at Ryde. This walk continues onto the Buffalo Reserve Boronia and onto the Great North Walk all the way to Newcastle 175 kms away ( if one is so inclined). The 50 Hectare reserve is a remnant of bushland situated between the Lane Cove and Parramatta rivers within the suburb of East Ryde and near Gladesville, Hunters Hill and Ryde. The name Field of Mars was given by Governor Phillip, when in January 1792 he granted to two marines the first parcels of land. The reserve is known for its Sydney sandstone, Sydney blue gums, red gums and many native birds. Over the last 18 months the tracks have become well wore because of the lockdown. However this was a less ambitious walk to complete two laps around the reserve which skirts the Field of Mars cemetery. In the spirit of the Olympics the pace was set at twice our walking clubs average speed of 2 kph at a brisk 4.4 kph. A good time was had by all and I arrived home in time to enjoy a home brew and a look at the Olympics.

-Canterbury Bankstown is an LGA that requires masks to be worn at all times when outside your home so yesterday we thought we would have a go and got as far as collecting the mail and bringing the bins in. Today though we started with an online gym session and then ventured forth and walked for about 20 minutes along flat paths around our area. Down the road we saw a very elaborate mail box and front fence of a neighbour then passed Canterbury Racecourse and noticed a few people out with dogs and one lady sitting under a tree. On to Lees Park and then were a few more people with dogs and I think everyone was wearing masks but we were very distant from people. On the way back home up a slight hill and my glasses were fogging up so took them off. Then of course when I was crossing a road had to put them on again to see how far down the curb was. Glad to be home in time for the Woolies delivery complete with beer and fresh food. I must have clicked on whole pumpkin instead of a piece so am now making pumpkin soup to freeze!

-What a bright sunny afternoon for walking around the streets! We turned right out of the drive and walked up the Boulevarde past Miranda North School. Next February it will be 50 years since I started my teaching career here teaching Kindergarten. We turned right into Kareena Rd going past a beautiful Magnolia tree and a mixed planting of daisies beside the path. At the intersection of Kareena and Sutherland Hospitals we headed down the Kingsway. On the left, backing onto the railway line is an ever increasing number of large apartment blocks. A phenomenon through the Shire. Next is Westfield, once called Miranda Fair and still called that by many who can remember. Turn right at Central Ave and it is down to the War Memorial on the edge of Seymour Shaw playing fields. Soon all this area is to be upgraded with new sporting areas. We crossed through the soccer fields (families were enjoying some games of friendly soccer) and wound down to Kiora Rd before crossing at the Five Ways and heading home. A nice day to be out for 53 mins and 3.37K.

Needing a few groceries, we headed up Penshurst St (Masks Worn) to the local shops, passing Gifford Park, a Heritage listed Federation house & St Joseph’s Convent. After buying our supplies we headed down another way past the new Penshurst School. A few other photos were taken before we returned on to Penshurst St and home. As our LGA is in a Lockdown we have only been on a few short walks and receive our groceries online. We have dismantled our old BBQ, painted it & it will use to put plants on it. Other activities – Gardening, Jigsaws & redoing some older DVD’s.
The finish
-we each headed back home to lockdown to hear about the ever increasing numbers of those with Covid 19.
So glad we could enjoy some time out in the sun to explore our local areas.
Distance walked
-this varied depending on how comfortable each one felt about leaving home.
