A spectacular day for a ferry ride and walk.
Along the Way:
- boarded the ferry to Watsons Bay at 9.45am
- enjoyed the sunshine and wind in our faces as we sat outside
- morning tea at a local café just up the hill from the wharf
- started walking at about 10.30
- walked a bit further up the hill to the Gap and then along the paved walk around HMAS Watson
- the sandstone cliffs, rock ledges, rock pools, blue ocean water and views back to the city were all beautiful
- walked to Camp Cove beach and continued up some cobble steps that were first built by Governor Macquarie to transport horse drawn cannons to South Head in case of invasion.
- walked past the gun emplacement pointing straight up the harbor to the bridge
- walked past Lady Jane beach and marveled at the view!
- the walk then continued and is called the South Head Heritage Trail and is a loop around the lighthouse and the lighthouse keeper’s cottage
- stopped to take in the great ocean views around the historic red and white striped Hornby lighthouse
- the Hornby Lighthouse was built in 1858 and has views to ocean in the east, Sydney Harbour to the west and North Head to the north
- more spectacular views in front of the lighthouse towards North Head and down to the water’s edge
- saw some yachts out training for the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. One was called Black Jack and had a black sail
- returned to Camp Cove and walked along the beach
- read the plaque at Green Point Reserve to commemorate where Phillip first landed in Port Jackson and presumably met the Birrabirragal mob
- some of us took a side track down to where there is marker and obelisk to show where the boom net crossed the harbour in WWII
- back at Watson Bay we had take-away lunch sitting on a bench under a magnificent shady fig tree.
- ferry ride back to Circular Quay seeing our wonderful skyline of buildings
- arrived at Circular Quay Station about 1.40pm ready to catch our transport back home
Time Taken: approx 2 hours of walking plus morning tea and lunch.
