February 2014 Report
Venue
Minnamurra to Kiama via the coast
Participants
Ron, Chris, Colin, Natalie, Peter, Yvonne, Helen,
The start
The group boarded the south coast train at various stations along the line and travelled the 1 ½ hours plus to Minnamurra.
Highlights
Morning tea and cookies at a trendy Minnamurra cafe (Colin had cake and no sausage rolls for Pete)
Rangoon Reserve was the first stop and we looked over the river to Rangoon Island then out to the ocean. Ron told how he nearly got washed to the entrance when out fishing with his brother as a young boy!
What a view along the coast looking back towards Minnamurra with Cathedral rock standing majestically in the ocean
Cameron Boyd was well known for his surfing ability in this section of the coast and a plaque draws our attention to his contribution
Several areas along the coast provide evidence of quarrying many years ago. A small cove appears to have been used to allow boats access to a wooden wharf
One old quarry now shelters the sewerage works, a joint funded project between the Kiama council and the water board (started 1988)
Board riders enjoyed the northern end of Bombo beach
The Spring Creek wetlands provided a haven for a variety of birds and vegetation
Some of the group walked up to the Kiama Blow Hole and then we all enjoyed lunch of fish and chips at the wharf
Pelicans and sting rays enjoyed the scraps the fishermen threw them as they filleted their fish at the wharf
The finish
A walk around some of Kiama’s older buildings from the latter part of the 19th century– court house, post office, banks – was enjoyed before we boarded the train for the trip back to Sydney
