Ashfield Heritage Walk number 3

Met: Ashfield Station at 9.30
Participants - Ron, Chris, Peter, Colin and Natalie
We started at Ashfield for coffee where the sausage rolls were served with a small bowl of salad!
The walk took place on the north side of the railway line.
Points of Interest:
*Ashfield station completed in 1855, underpass built in 1891
*St Vincent’s Catholic Presbytery 1893
*St Vincent’s Church 1895-first church of Roman Basilica style in Australia
*Superior School 1905
*Bethlehem College first school for girls in western Sydney-1882
*De la Salle College 1917
*There were many examples of Victorian era houses such as 79 Bland Street and also examples of Victorian Italianate houses such as No 25 and 27 Bland Street, which were mirror image semi-detached, 2 story houses
*St John the Baptist Anglican Church, oldest authenticated building in Ashfield, built between 1849 and 1901. One end of the church had a Norman style architecture.
*St John Cemetery included a first fleeter grave
*Number 79 Alt street-“Amesbury” had the Belvedere Tower which was originally used for astronomy, the main entrance was covered by a stick style porte cochere (a covered entrance large enough for vehicles to pass through, typically opening onto a courtyard), 2 terracotta lyrebirds also decorated the front wall
*Albert Parade Reserve-many interesting houses-one with a substantial jacaranda tree, rubber tree and frangipani tree
*Leaving Ashfield we continued on to Burwood
*Passed a deep storm water channel that flows into Iron Cove Creek, Burwood Girls High School and Westfields
*Had pizzas for lunch in the main street before all leaving on buses to go home.
