March 2018 Report
Venue
Rose Bay to Watsons Bay
Participants
Ron, Chris, Richard, Helen, Yvonne, Natalie, Colin, Peter
The start
We met at 9.00am at Circular Quay and caught the ferry to the Rose Bay wharf
Points of Interest
Walked through Rose Bay shopping strip noting a leg of lamb for $45 and a loin of pork for well over $70! Later we saw grain fed beef for $78 a kilo!!
We turned down Tivoli Ave and joined the ‘Heritage Walk’ along the eastern suburbs harbor coast line. There were constant spectacular views of the harbor, the city sky line and the passing parade of yachts, ferries, bigger boats and sea planes. Scrub lined both sides of the walkway.
We passed Queens beach, Tingarra beach and Milk beach and then saw Strickland House gracing the hill just before reaching Neilson Park. This was a beaut spot for morning tea.
From here it was round the bend and through the gardens of Vaucluse House. Wentworth used to live here.
Up lots of stairs to New South Head Rd, down Laguna St and past the Mark Moran retirement complex, once the site of Vaucluse High School. We walked through South Head cemetery and over to Christison Park which runs along the eastern side of South Head. Macquarie Lighthouse, the Old Signal station (see Natalie’s photo), and the anchor from the Dunbar are along the way. A small area before the gap recognizes the work of Don Richie who over many years talked with those who contemplated suicide by jumping off the gap.
Down to Watsons Bay and it was time to purchase lunch at Doyles take away. We sat on the wall, peacefully watching the changing scenes of the harbour
The finish
The ferry took us back to Circular Quay via Rose Bay
Distance walked
Approximately 9 Km
