Hyde Park Walk
Thursday, 11th May 2023
The group met at an outside café in front of St James Church at about 9.30am
Participants- Chris, Peter, Helen, Richard, Yvonne, Colin and Natalie.
Along the way-
*There were many delays on the public transport this morning. Natalie and Colin’s train was only about 10 minutes late but Yvonne had many train and bus issues and was very relieved to finally make it to St James.
*The weather was gloriously sunny and warm, just perfect for a stroll and catch up with each other.
*We walked down the left side of Hyde Park finding old and new statues to look at
-William Bede Dalley statue
-St Mary’s and the Archibald Fountain looked wonderful in the sunlight
-The 3 trees planted in 1963 to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the 1st settlement
-Sandringham Garden memorial garden to King George V and V1
-James Cook statue
-The Frazer drinking fountain
*Once we were at the War Memorial we continued back to St James on the right side of Hyde Park.
-The Olympic Memorial tribute to athletes who have become casualties of war
-Mustafa Kemal Attaturk memorial
-Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander memorial called “Thou didst let fall”
-The Hyde Park Obelisk- a sewer vent from a previous time now just an obelisk.
-2 more fountains
-statue of 3 figures-Water, Fire and Earth
-back at St James for the statues of Victoria and our group photo with Prince Albert.
*Lunch was at the café outside the Sydney Eye Hospital
*We left in 2 groups to go in 2 different directions. Colin, Peter and Natalie walked to Circular Quay and Peter caught a ferry home. Chris, Yvonne, Helen and Richard walked to Martin Place to catch the train home.
Distance covered -My Fitbit says we walked about 6km and my Apple phone says about 5.5km. By my calculations of dividing the total length taken by the square root of the hypotenuse of an imaginary triangle and subtracting walking to and from the station we probably walked about 3 to maybe 5km.
Time taken -9.30 to about 1.15pm
