January report
1. Meet at the Quay. Catch the ferry to Manly. As the ferry is a few minutes late, we have to run for the bus. Oh dear, Yvonne’s foot!
2. Alight near the Quarantine station and walk to the cafe for morning tea. We are treated to some of Chris’s Christmas cake. Yum!
3. Head off to the North Head lookout points for some of the best views of a harbour anywhere in the world. Blue skies, blue water, tall cliffs, lots of boats out to enjoy the day. Wow!
4. Back towards the cafe area and onto the Memorial Walk, officially opened December 2012. Members of the public had purchased a ‘brick’ and had a message inscribed to remember loved ones contribution to the various armed forces. These have been laid into a path. Beautiful sandstone memorials explained the many wars that Australians have participated in.
5. On past the gun emplacements and entrances to the tunnels before diverting to the Gunners Walk around the Floating Swamp.
6. When at the Visitors Shop in the old Army barracks area, the volunteer explained the layout of the peninsula and plans for a coordinated path around the whole point.
7. Walk down past Manly hospital, through the grounds of the magnificent old sandstone monastery (now used as a centre for business studies) and through to the water’s edge near Shelley Beach.
8. Back to Manly and fish and chips in the shade on the beachfront. Lick those fingers!
9. Best of all, an ice cream (double cone) before a run to the ferry.
10. See you next month!
