May 2017 Report
Venue
The Ponds Walk – Rydalmere to Mobbs hill
Participants
Ron, Chris, Richard, Helen, Natalie, Colin, Yvonne, (Peter missing again!)
The start
The group met at Clyde and travelled by train to Rydalmere where we had morning tea and secured tape for a pair of shoes!!
Distance walked
Approximately 10.3 Km all up
Points of Interest
- the track travels from Crowgey St Rydalmere to Eric Mobbs Lookout on Marsden Rd Carlingford covering approximately 7.2 Km. Marri Badoo means many waters in the local Darug language and recognized the chain of ponds and springs which flow through the reserve to form Ponds Creek and its tributaries. The local area was originally known as ‘The Ponds’ when it was settled by Governor Arthur Phillip who granted 30-50 acres of land to 14 former convicts and their families.
- the track winds through the Dundas valley requiring a few road crossings and passage through some open recreational spaces. Housing and some industrial areas back onto the track.
- we noted the tall Ironbark trees, the various ferns growing along the track and loads of introduced scrub and vine which has overtaken the original growth. Birds could be heard in the trees but only a few were seen. Some boxes had been placed on tree trunks and we guessed they were for the ring tail possums. A sign warned of snakes but thankfully none were seen.
- at Mobbs Hill we looked out across the sprawling city. Back to the noisy suburbs!
- more information is available at The Ponds Walk website
The finish
After lunch at Carlingford Court (and a new pair of shoes) we walked to Carlingford station and caught trains home
