A spectacular day for walking, sunny and warm with a slight breeze.
Along the Way:
- Morning tea stop at 10am in a local café at Canterbury and started walking at 10.30am.
- Walked down the street to see the Mary McKillop Reserve and the Hall of Fame walk of local famous sportspeople.
- Walked around Salt Pan Creek, which are artificial wetlands with 3 ponds that filter the water coming down the creek before it enters Cooks River. This provides nesting and habitat for water birds like ibises and moorhens.
- Walked along the river noting a large house being built with a huge sandstone retaining wall.
- There were sandstone blocks placed in many places along the walk to sit and look at the river.
- Sadly still seeing dumped shopping trolleys in a side canal.
- Crossed back to the northern side of the river and noted how busy it was with cyclists and pedestrians trying to share the path.
- Looked at the Sugar House Works building with the sun shining on the sandstone, looked splendid. It operated as a Sugar Mill from 1842-1854.
- Saw the Mudcrab sites at Foord Avenue, which was an old sandstone quarry, and Ewan Park where the council has recently developed a rain garden to control storm water.
- Crossed the river towards Beaman Park.
- Crossed the river again towards Marrickville Golf Club.
- Walked through Steel Park where there were wonderful new play areas and some aboriginal markers, such as the sculpture of a nawi or bark canoe.
- Walked up a short set of steps to the site of a former gothic mansion called The Warren, owned by Thomas Holt.
- At the bottom of that area we saw the plaque explaining how the family never buried anyone in the set of mausoleums that had been cut into the rock face.
- Arrived at Gough Whitlam Park at 12.30pm for our picnic lunch and Colin says thank you for the candle and cake for his upcoming 70th birthday.
- At 1.20pm we walked around the park noticing the lovely gardens on the small rise and the sculpture with the words Respect, Unity Peace.
- We crossed the road to pick up the Two Valley Trail heading up Wolli Creek.
- There were some well-trodden paths and some muddy bush tracks for us to enjoy!
- Jackson Street stone houses, built buy the quarrymen of the area, are always a treat to see.
- The last stretch of the walk was across parkland where previously market gardens existed in the 1930s.
- Arrived at Turella Station at 2.15 where we caught our various trains to go home.
