We started at Platform 2 for a quick identification of art deco features as we looked out to the MCA and the Harbour Bridge pylons.
Points of Interest:
- Walked to the south pylon, read display panels about the original buildings, closer inspection of features on the side of the pylon
- Back to have coffee at the café on the top of the MCA
- Kyle House-built 1931, wonderful excitement for Ron and Chris who worked in the deep dark basement of this lovely building.
- Transport House opened 1935
- AWA Building opened 1939
- Grace Building opened 1930, headquarters of the US army in the 1940s, used by General Macarthur, then requisitioned by the Commonwealth Government in 1945, renovated and used as a hotel in the 1990s.
- MLC building in Martin Place opened in 1938
- Commonwealth Bank, opened as the State Savings Bank in 1928. The ground floor and the vault area are wonderful and this is where part of the Matrix was filmed. We were not allowed to take pictures there. The Chubb vault door to the safety deposits is locked each night. The hinges on the door looked as big as… they were enormous! The furniture, mosaics and decorations were beautiful
- City Mutual Building where Rockpool restaurant used to be
- DJ’s Elizabeth St, visited the Spring flower display
- War Memorial in Hyde Park
- Down Macquarie Street to BMA House in Macquarie Street
- Into the Botanical Gardens for lunch at the café and a much needed rest.
