January 2018 Report
Venue
Taronga Zoo to Balmoral
Participants
Ron, Chris, Richard, Helen, Yvonne, Natalie, Colin
The start
We met at 9.00am at Circular Quay and caught the ferry to the zoo wharf
Points of Interest
-the day started out very grey and drizzly with rain falling over the areas south of the harbour. We continued on, only needing wet gear for a short time.
-we walked via Bradley’s Head noting the various plaques to Naval ships of the past, then by Taylors Bay and Chowder Head to Clifton Gardens for morning tea. Chris’s Christmas cake was enjoyed by all.
-as it was one of the highest tides of the year (2.1m) we had to negotiate some wet areas to leave the gardens and continue by the military area at Georges Head. We walked on to Middle Head going past the HMAS Penguin Naval Base and then ‘The Club’ once the clubhouse for a nine hole golf course. We had lunch in the park. Watch those magpies!
-after lunch it was on to Balmoral via all those stairs!! Many families were now enjoying the warm, clear day by playing cricket or going for a swim.
-during the walk we all noted loads of native plants (including Flannel flowers) and ferns, lots of introduced pest plants, Bush Turkeys, cockatoos and the colours and unusual shapes of the gum trees. The many different views across the harbour, with the variety of passing boats, were also great to see.
The finish
-from Balmoral we were lucky to ride in a bus decked out in the ‘WW2 Camouflage Colours’ to commemorate the 85 years since the 1942 colours were first used. We had the bus to ourselves on its fast run to Taronga Zoo wharf for us to catch the ferry back to Circular Quay
Distance walked
- Approximately 11 Km
