Report - January 2023
Location - Johnstons Bay Pyrmont to Darling Harbour
Participants - Ron, Chris, Helen, Richard, Natalie, Colin, Yvonne
The start - We met at Central station at 9.30 and had morning tea at ‘Eternity’ before catching the light rail to the
John St stop
Points of Interest
-we could have walked down Bowman St to the old Glebe Island bridge but decided to walk down Harris St to the water because of the weather conditions (strong winds and trying to rain).
-it is now possible to walk from the GIB all the way to Woolloomooloo via the waterfront. Great views everywhere.
-the wharfs were once a hive of activity as they were the main dock areas for bringing supplies to the city. As container ships became the norm, the work was moved elsewhere and eventually the area was redeveloped by the Darling Harbour Authority.
-we passed very large recreational boats, saw two cruise ships moored at Balmain, saw ‘our’ quaint little ferry on its way to Darling Harbour, observed the many housing complexes built around Pyrmont and noted a couple of interesting, well maintained brick buildings which are heritage listed former naval victualling yard and warehouses now vacant or used for television studio offices, REVY.
-Darling Island was once a rocky knoll attached to the mainland by tidal mud flats
-a Mr Johns was given land in the area as a land grant but never worked the area as he was later convicted of murder!!
-see the REVY website for more detailed information on the area.
-we continued around Pyrmont Bay past the ‘Welcome Wall’ and the old sailing ships moored at the Maritime Museum. Then it was a walk over the Pyrmont Bridge.
The finish
-we decided to walk down Cockle Bay wharf and head past Tumbalong park to the food complex for lunch, after which it was a walk to Central station and a train home.
Distance walked
About 6.2 Km
