Another spectacular day for walking.
Along the Way:
- Morning tea stop at 10 am in a local café called the Grumpy Bakery, started walking at 10.30am.
- 190 steps down to the water’s edge and feeling glad that we are not doing the walk in the reverse direction.
- Oyster Cove-many apartments surrounding a lovely old building which was part of the original North Shore Gas Works
- Into Badangi Reserve for a short connecting walk to Berry Island.
- Beautiful angophora trees (Sydney red gums) and lots of ferns to see.
- Berry Island circuit had great views of the harbour looking back to the Coal Loader and the city.
- There were a couple of side paths down to the water’s edge.
- The water looked very clean and sparkled in the sun.
- On the western side of Berry Island, the views were of the gas storage tanks, some of which looked abandoned and other sections still looked in working order.
- Had an early picnic lunch soaking up the sun
- Onto the Gore Hill track linking Berry Island to Wollstonecraft Station.
- This was a lovely shady walk through the bush although you had to watch your step as the path had many tree roots ready to trip you up.
- The walk followed the Gore Cove gully and Berry Creek.
- Mangroves marked a choice in the walk at the end of the cove. We all decided to take the walk up to Vista Street to see the view. Also Peter had parked his car there so it seemed like a good idea to see him safely back to his car.
- This part of the walk was straight uphill. Although the steps were mostly even and sturdy and the bush shaded us from the sun, it was very hard going up.
- The view at the top was lovely and you could glimpse the city skyline over the tops of the trees on Berry Island
- We sat for quite a while to recover and rehydrate. A special thanks to Richard and Helen for the jelly beans!
- Then back down the same path and we joined the original bush track towards Wollstonecraft.
- The bush was beautiful with cool shady areas and lots of ferns as we followed the gully along the creek.
- We began to hear the sounds of the trains so we knew we were close but still had to meander uphill to the station
- Seated on the train at 1.21pm.
