October 2016 Report
Venue
To Auburn Botanic Gardens
Participants
Ron, Chris, Richard, Helen, Natalie, Peter
The start
The group met at Granville station and headed to the Zodova Café to have morning tea
Points of Interest
-we started off walking parallel to the railway line and then past factory areas (International mail, Presbyterian church facility among them) and joined the path beside Duck River. Apparently lots of Black snakes, along with Ibis and ducks, inhabit areas along the track!
-we walked through Mona Park, beside Oriole stadium and then past Webbs Ave playing fields before reaching the picnic areas alongside the Gardens
_the lovely Japanese Gardens surrounded a large lake filled with carp and frisky ducks
-into the Botanic gardens with a long reflection pool at the end of which was a Pine Tree grown from seed from Gallipoli. The rose area contained many lovely varieties and colours just about to come into full bloom. Flowering Peach and other blossom trees also attracted our attention.
-across the road was an aviary that we quickly inspected. Lunch was enjoyed at the Tennis Club
-we continued on the path beside Duck River down to Melita Stadium. Here we chatted to some council workers who advised us of the direction in which to continue, through Peter Hislop Park and Princes Park until we reached the Sydney Water Supply Pipe Line. We climbed the steps and proceeded along the far side of the pipe line towards Hector St. THE GATE WAS LOCKED. HOW DO WE GET OUT? TRESSPASSERS WILL BE PROSECUTED! After some juggling of the gate, a lot of squeezing and plenty of discussion we all got through the gate or over the fence. Thank goodness for that!
The finish
-our legs were tired but we made it through the streets along Helen St to Sefton train station
Distance walked
Approximately 12 Km
